We conserve land, economically empower local communities, and promote global sustainability and equity. This is done through utilizing the invasive Prosopis juliflora (Mesquite) tree for a variety of products:
Green charcoal
Animal feed
Bio-fertilizer
Mesquite flour
And many more products!
New Threats need New Approaches
Since 1991, when modern Somaliland declared independence following a devastating civil war, the country has been rebuilt, essential institutions have been restored, and regular democratic elections have taken place. Now, Somaliland, like the rest of the Horn of Africa, is facing some of the worst climate conditions in the world. Years of drought and food insecurity pose a grave threat to the country and all of the progress that has been made. Local solutions for local problems are needed more than ever and our work represents just that. Prosopis utilization is a solution which economically empowers local communities while addressing the country’s hunger and climate crises at the same time.
We are providing Solutions that scale
Lander Prosopis is turning an invasive species that has devastated farmland into:
Green charcoal - Charcoal from Prosopis is highly efficient, burns twice as long as the standard charcoal in Somaliland, and has a very pleasant aroma. A longer burning time means less money is spent by the consumer long-term.
Prosopis Animal Feed - over 70% of the country relies on livestock for its mainstay livelihood. The droughts cause massive death rates of animals, and the ones that survive must be sold early causing pastoralists to lose their livelihoods. Prosopis Animal Feed is a regenerative and nutrient-dense alternative.
Prosopis Flour -Prosopis flour is high in protein and amino acids, is gluten-free, and is a natural sweetener. Prosopis flour can build resilience in one of the most malnourished populations in the world.
Once we have cleared Prosopis from farmland, we regenerate the land to be productive again through our RESEED project
